1983 Roccanti by SOMEC - continued I have never seen a
Roccanti bike before. An internet search has turned up
nothing that would shed light on the origin of this unique bike.
Clearly the frame and the pantographing on the components is the
work of SOMEC, but I don't know who or what Roccanti was. My
best guess is that this was a show bike commissioned by an Italian
bike shop called Roccanti. Such practice was common in the
80s.
The bike is in
original condition except for the following items which I
replaced:
- New Campagnolo brake
cable housing (lined) and new Campagnolo brake cables.
- Genuine NOS
Campagnolo world-logo gum hoods. These are not reproduction
gum hoods.
- Period-correct
Vittoria Corsa CX tubular tires - my all time favorite tubulars,
pulled from my personal stash. These are used but in
excellent, fully-rideable condition. I have pumped them to
100 psi, and they hold air for days.
That's it.
Everything else on the bike is, as far as I can tell, original
equipment. I should point out that I cleaned the bike, but I
have not polished any componets, nor have I filled in any of the
pantographing. The paint that you see in the pantographing
is the original paint from when this bike was first built almost
30 years ago.
The bike has very few
miles on it. Most of the components look almost new.
The gold plating is in outstanding condition. Naturally
there are a few small spots where the plating is dull or corroded,
or has worn off and the nickel plating below is visible.
This is typical of gold plated frames that are almost 30 years
old, no matter how well kept they are. This bike also has
clearcoat over the gold plating, and in some spots the clearcoat
is showing its age. But overall, the finish on the frame is
in excellent condition.
SOMEC bikes can be
very special, and this is one of the prettiest and most
interesting SOMECs you are likely to ever see.
Below you will find
about 100 photos which should be enough to fully document the
details and condition of the bike. It's a lot to get
through, but if you're seriously interested in the bike, you will
appreciate them. And if you're just admiring the bike, I
hope you enjoy the photos.

One of the most unusual "through the top

Additional Photos
The following are
additional photos that will be of interest primarily to bidders
and hardcore bike porn aficionados only.

The saddle shell is stamped 83, so
I can confidently say that it is original equipment on this bike.

The big ring looks like a Super Record
ring, but it's a Nuovo Record ring that has been modified. The
inner web has been removed, and the areas above the chainring bolts
have been cut out.

Notice that the cutout is not the same as
the cutout in Super Record rings. This is a more stylized,
curvy shape. Note also how little wear there is on the teeth.

Closeup of the unidirectional Regina CX
chain. The inner plates have a different profile which provides
better shifting from a smaller to a larger cog. It was the top
Regina chain in it's day.

The top Regina freewheel at the time, the
7 speed CX-S. This one is 13-14-15-16-17-18-19.
A friend told me that photos of the bottom
bracket shell should always be included when documenting a bike.
He's right, so here they are. The shell is stamped A196.

Notice how clean the lockring is - no
wrench marks here.

A few photos of the underside of the
frame.

The leather is in really great condition,
top and bottom.
The weighing: as pictured here, a hair
over 20 pounds.

This completes my presentation. I
hope you enjoyed it. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.

International Shipping
International shipping to
most countries,
with the US
Postal Service or Fedex, is limited to boxes that do not exceed 108
inches in length plus girth. A box that is 36 x 9 x 27 would
equal 108 inches (36 length + (18 + 54) girth). For the Somec to
fit into such a box, it would have to be almost completely
disassembled (including removal of the hub axles). In the case
of Australia, the limit is 79 inches and it would require packing the
bike in two boxes (one for the wheels and another for the frameset and
other components).
I suggest that all
international bidders consider using
the shipping
service offered by myus.com. This company will generally ship to
anywhere in the world for less than the USPS, Fedex or DHL.
Delivery is door-to-door and it fast. And most importantly, when
you ship with myus.com, the size restriction of 108 inches (or 79
to Australia) does not apply. This lets me pack the bike in
one box, with a minimum of disassembly. This is less work for me
and for you, and there is less chance of damage.
I charge an international
handling fee of $25. But if you ship with myus.com, I do not
have to charge that fee because I am shipping domestically.
Additionally, if you ship with myus.com, I will reduce my flat
shipping rate to $75. The total shipping cost to you (the
myus.com fee, plus $75) will probably still be the same or less than
USPS or Fedex (much less in the case of Australia or Thailand).
I highly recommend using the service - in fact,
PLEASE use it! It will make your international shipment faster,
safer and much less expensive. Here is a link to the
myus.com website.
Please check it out. (And in case your are wondering, I do not
have an ownership interest in myus.com, nor are they paying me a
commission.) Thank you for reading this and good luck bidding.
