I have for sale a very special and rare Gibson Les Paul Spotlight Special. This is not Gibson’s recent reproduction but the original model made in 1983.
In 1983 Gibson made a very limited run of 211 Les Pauls that were completely unique from the standard Les Pauls of 1983.
They were so unique that Gibson assigned their very own serial number pattern outside its’ regular, and consistent pattern. That pattern was 83-XXX, where “XXX” is a number from 001 to 211. This particular Spotlight is number 022. The Spotlight Special is instantly recognizable by its’ contrasting strip of walnut down the center of the body, with heavily quilted maple on both sides of the walnut strip.
All Spotlight Specials had a gold “Custom Shop Edition” logo on the rear of the headstock despite the fact that they were not made in Gibson’s Custom Shop. There is no pickguard or holes indicating that their once was one. This is in keeping with Gibson’s specifications for the Spotlight Special of 1983.
Gibson actually made two versions of this instrument and this one is the “ASB” version. As you can see from the photos, the guitar has a highly figured quilted maple top, solid cream colored binding, traditional ebony veneer with Gibson pearl inlay, and traditional keystone shaped machine heads. The guitar has the basic Les Paul electric features and does not include any fancy electronics (e.g. coil taps) or tailpieces (e.g. the TP-6) which were common at that time. All gold hardware that is somewhat tarnished keeping in mind that the instrument is almost 30 years old.
One of the more interesting features of the Spotlight Special is that the strip of binding on the cutaway is styled after the 1950’s models and follows the contour of the body exposing some of the maple top below the binding.
This particular Spotlight Special has the look and feel of a 1959 reissue, with excellent weight, tone, and vibe. The neck thickness is somewhere between a ’59 and ’60 feel.
The guitar is in remarkably good shape for a 30 year old instrument. The gold is tarnished and there are a few dings on the back of the instrument like you would expect on an instrument that had been played. There are no wood cracks or other physical damage. All the binding is intact although there appears to be some surface cracks in the plastic binding. All parts are, to the best of my knowledge, original. The pickups sound great! The case is not original.
So there you have it. A very rare and great playing Gibson Les Paul of a limited run of 211. A true collectible which also happens to play and sound great!
