I bought this car about 10 weeks ago and have decided to sell it. I am showing the listing description from when I purchased it below.......
This is a well maintained, partially restored and garaged 1979 Mercedes 280CE. Silver exterior with blue MB Tex interior. Many receipts and new parts, rust free body and above average condition. This is an unmolested car that’s a good example of a robust older Benz.
Options include auto temp control, power locks, cruise control, power windows, right hand visor mirror, right hand outside rear view mirror, clear fog lamps, auto transmission, power steering, power antenna, rear defroster and factory power sunroof.
Paint is nice with no fading, no peeling, no checking, all trim is nice and some of it brand new. No bondo surprises lurking below the surface because the car NEVER rotted and was never smacked up. It does have the occasional minor chip due to use of the car. Very presentable, not sloppy. Original sheet metal, fender bolts have never been turned, no replaced panels, no rot in the seams, no rot in the jack holes, no rot in any fender, original rubber undercoat is intact throughout. No saggy door hinges. No cheap paint job overspray mess. Seams and panels align properly, and all body hardware operates well.
Original Pirelli spare tire, 4 correct repainted MB ”Bundt” alloy wheels with period correct MB cast metal valve stems. Tires have plenty of tread. Four new rebuilt calipers, new pads and 4 new flex lines. All bushings, ball joints, tie rods, end links, half shafts and prop shaft are a-ok. Parking brake works just fine. New Bilsteins all around.
Straight six engine and auto transmission are strong running and there are absolutely no engine and transmission issues. The body has about 130,000 on it. I replaced the engine and transmission about 6 years ago with correct 1979 units that had a documented 63,000 miles on them. I have put about 10,000 miles on the car since I did this work. The engine and trans have been maintained like the rest of the car. Regular fluid and filter changes along with required maintenance. No staining, no leaks of any sort, no strange noises and no strange smells. Absolutely no smoke ever with good oil control. Runs well hot and cold. Powertrain is a stong 8 to 9 easy, all day long.
Recent premium Bosch battery with free roadside assistance, new alternator, new fan clutch, recent tune-up, air filter and aluminum-safe extended life coolant. Brand new Bosch fuel pump, fuel pressure accumulator, fuel filter, fuel flex lines and mounting hardware. All spark plugs are tan/gray in color. Brand new full exhaust system from the manifolds back: 2 header pipes, catalytic converter, center pipe and tail pipe with correct donut hangars. Tranny is stock, leak free, snaps off confident shifts at any temperature in any forward gear and also in reverse gear. No slipping in any gear, no burned fluid, no damaged lines and no delayed shifting. Bright red fluid.
The interior is original MB tex and quite nice. It was refreshed with the interior pieces from the same 63,000 mile car. As a result the seats, door panels, original white perforated headliner, console, burl wood trim and loop pile carpet are well above average condition. Seats are NOT a saggy, smelly worn out mess. As with many cars the rear seat looks and feels like its practically brand new as is the front passenger seat. Driver’s seat is almost as nice with very minor wear on the left bolster from entry and exiting the car. It is not ripped, not cracked, not split and no padding showing. MB Tex is very durable. No repair necessary. This car is garaged and so all materials are soft and supple, not faded and not dried out. All carpeting looks very nice with no burns, no stains and no chunks missing and no fading. Unfortunately the original dash does have some cracking. I decided to leave well enough alone and cover it with a dash mat (included).
Since this purchase I have put a cap on the dash to cover the cracks. I have also had the kick down switch replaced. The CIS fuel injection was adjusted/tuned so it runs and starts great (passes NV smog). The AC system was repaired with some new hoses and a dryer. Unforunetely as soon as the AC began to blow cold the old compressor seized. So it will need a compressor. The dash blower works only in high and the cruise has trouble holding speed. The left rear window only goes 3/4 of the way down (feels like it is just off the track but goes up/down electrically). I also replaced the auxiliary fan. The pictures show no radio but I have installed a nice AM/FM/CD. The power antenna and clock work ( as do all the gauges). Sunroof works great.
