1955 MERCEDES BENZ 300 SL GULLWING: 6-CYL., 45° SLANT HEAD O.H.C. ENGINE BORE: 3.35", STROKE: 3.46" DISPLACEMENT: 182.7 C.I. (2996 C.C.) H.P., 250 @6200 R.P.M. WHEELBASE: 94.5" One of the most fascinating and dramatic designs attempted by Mercedes, world production on this model totaled only 867. Its maximum speed depended on the axle ratio and was from 145 MPH to 165 MPH. The car was designed for endurance type road racing and had an extremely large fuel capacity (34 gal.) and a double neck filler. The frame was somewhat innovative in that it was a lattice type made of thin welded steel tubing. The automobile weighed 2849 Ibs. The most distinctive and distinguishing feature of the machine was, of course, the "Gullwing" overhead opening doors from which the car got its name. It was very successful in the endurance events of its era.
