1948 Tucker

1948 Tucker Franklin Mint 1:24 scale diecast model

In 1948, American automobile manufacturing was dominated by Detroit’s Big Three.  It was their designs, their engineering, their marketing that drove the American automobile industry, that provide Americans with all their driving options.

Then, in 1948 a visionary individual, Preston Tucker, challenged the dominance of the Big Three and created an innovative automobile that was far ahead of its time.

The Tucker was designed in only 5 days and only 51 models were ever produced.  But in its short life, it became legendary…pointing the way for the automobile establishment to follow.

One of Tucker’s innovative concerns was safety.  Massive front and rear bumpers, an armored “safety chamber,” and a recessed instrument “pod” were specifically designed for the safety of driver and passengers.

The engine, designed so that it could be removed and replaced within 15 minutes, was a rear mounted 335 cubic inch flat six, directly borrowed from a helicopter.  Its innovative three headlights included the third “cyclops” headlight which was designed to point light in the direction of steering…a feature that many of the most expensive luxury cars of present time are now offering.

The Tucker was not only safe, but durable and dependable.  So much so that Preston Tucker had one built expressly for his wife..painted “Waltz Blue”, the same color as this replica 1948 Tucker being offered.

More than an automobile, the Tucker, and the man who created it, represents the true essence of America…the individual heroically striving against the establishment to create a new and better version of what already exists.

The Tucker weighed in at 4235 pounds and had a wheelbase of 130 inches.  The top speed was rated at 119 miles per hour.  This diecast model is assembled from over 140 separate components and hand painted to match the original car.

I’ve had the great pleasure of seeing a real Tucker, now in a friend’s private collection, and I can attest to the remarkable, authentic detail that this model represents.  I especially like the ‘suicide’ rear doors and the sizeable trunk where the engine is expected to be.  I hope you enjoy looking at this model as much as I have. I acquired this model as part of my collection in the 1990s.  It went from the box to the display in my smoke-free office and has been there ever since.  I'm the only one that ever handled it, occasionally looking it over from top to bottom to admire the incredible, intricate detail. This is a very accurate 1:24 scale and the model itself is about 8 inches long.

NO BOX: While I will include some of the original descriptive paperwork that came with the Tucker, unfortunately the room where the original boxes and paperwork were stored suffered water damage so I do not have the box.
