1948 GEORGE RICE BOURGNON OFFY MIDGET AUTO RACING PHOTO - BOARDTRACK MOTORDROME

CIRCA-1948. GEORGE RICE BOURGNON OFFY MIDGET AUTO RACING PHOTO.Gearge Rice was 1947 A.R.D.C. champ. Photo taken June 1948 at the New York Polo Grounds on the board track installed on a day off for the Giants baseball team. They only raced twice on the track with George winning the second feature race. The track was dismantled and reinstalled in the Rose Bowl in Passedena, Ca. It was used only eight times in Ca. then dismantled and sold. The track had an aluminum frame with fir planking installed on edge for added strength. It took 200 workers 8 hours to erect and dismantle the entire track. Unfornately it was too costly. Born on February 22, 1913, George fathered two daughters, Sarah and Glorianna, and a son, Edward, with his wife Bess. George Rice's real name was George J. Viola. When he started racing, he drove sprints, not midgets. When he heard about midgets he wanted to try them but his club at that time would not have permitted it. So he changed his last name to Rice after a friend, Charlie Rice. He loved the midgets and decided to stick with them and continued to use the name George "Georgie" Rice. George Rice was from Connecticut - He owned a Cadillac and Chevrolet dealership. The car dealership was in Milford CT. He started with Page Motors sweeping floors and moved up to pumping gas and even learned to. He saved most of the money he earned from racing in order to buy into the company and eventually did. Needless to say, his fame brought the company many clients, but it was his knowledge of engines that kept them coming back....some even after they moved from CT. His management of the repair service department kept the company in the black and his was a model for General Motors. He drove for many years with the name George Rice but his given name was George Viola, his brother John also raced under the name Johnny Rice. THey became known as the "Rice Brothers". The car in this photo is the Bourgnon Offy that George won many races in, the car was from Long Island.. George died Feb. 26, 2003, just 4 days after his 89th birthday . The shot was taken at the POLO GROUNDS portable board track. The car is the BOURGNON OFFY. An interesting aside is this - Driving for Ed Bourgnon, George Rice won a feature at the old Bridgeport CT Candlelite Stadium in this car as an OFFY and also with a Ford V860 engine, and later that year, Ed Bourgnon had a cycle (Carlheim) powered lightweight #12 built with which George also won a Candlelite Park Feature. I don't know of any other midget driver who won features at the same track in the same year with 3 completely different power plants.. Also with the same owner. Won an ARDC championship - In the 1940s in particular he was very successful. In 1947 alone he won the Midget track championship at Danbury (CT) Fair Racearena, Deer Park (NY) Speedway, and won his second consecutive title at West Haven (CT) Speedway. He was the 1947 ARDC Midget champion. In 1948 he won the Bridgeport (CT) Speedway Midget track championship. Source:1948 "Midget Auto Racing Souvenir Program" article by Nat Kleinfeld George also raced in LeMans, France, with the Briggs Cunningham team 1951. GEORGE RICE #36 AT THE POLO GROUNDS SPEEDWAY BOARD TRACK-TAKEN IN 1948. A nice shot- right on the boards. This is fantastic! A great looking Midget! I just love this shot! It is a sharp and clear 8 X 10 inch black and white glossy photo. A high quality photo that you will love! Professionally reproduced from the original photo. This would look great framed! I will ship in a photo mailer for safety.
