Item specifics

Composition: Solid Silver Product: Whisky Jug or Noggin
Maker: H B Johnson & Co of London Age: 1900-1940

Antique 1911 H'm Sterling Silver & Clear Cut Glass Whisky Jug or Noggin & Whisky Label from London

This Antique Whisky Jug or Noggin measures approximately 1 7/8 inches or 47 mm across from the hinge to the pouring lip by just under 1 3/8 inches or 34 mm across the width of the silver top from side to side, it is just over 2 1/2 inches or 65 mm across from the handle to the front of the glass body by 2 3/8 inches or 60 mm across the width or diameter of the base and it stands 4 3/4 inches or 212 mm tall to the top of the finial on its lid.

The silver label measures approximately 2 3/8 inches or 66 mm in total length from the top of the silver chain to the base of its label when it is hanging by a fraction under 1 3/8 inches or 34.5 mm across the width of the label from side to side and it is 3/4 of an inch or 19 mm across the depth of the label from top to bottom.

The Whisky jug or noggin is made from a hand blown clear glass body in a circular tapering shape that has a bulbous top with a glass handle, the underside of the body has been hand cut with a stylized star like decoration and the jug or noggin has a liquid capacity of 4 fluid ounces or 100 ml, the Whisky jug or noggin has a sterling silver mounted upper rim and pouring lip with a three section piano hinged sterling silver lid that has a thumb catch or finial on the top and the jug or noggin is complete with sterling silver kidney shape label that hangs on a sterling silver chain, the front of the label has been engraved with the word WHISKY and the back has been impressed with a full set of English 925 standard sterling silver hallmarks from the London assay office dated 1920, the Whisky jug or noggin and label have Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below and the inner lid along with the side of the mount have been impressed with English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows,

H.B.J & Co - Lion Passant - Leopard Head - q

H.B.J & Co is the silversmith or makers mark of H.B Johnson & Co, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver, the Leopard Head is the mark of the London assay office and the letter q is the date letter for 1911.

The condition is used and near Mint for its age.

The Whisky Label is in Mint Condition with No Dents and No Repairs.

The Whisky Jug or Noggin has No Chips, No Cracks and No Holes in its glass body, the silver top has No Large Dents, No Holes, No Splits, No Cracks and it has No Repairs that I have found, the noggin or jug stands straight, the decoration is crisp, the hinge is working perfectly as the lid opens and closes with ease, the jug holds liquid without leaking, the silver hallmarks are slightly rubbed in places but still legible although as this Whisky jug or noggin and label are used antiques the silver top does have the odd tiny shallow dent around the lower edge of the mount and the lid dips slightly at the point that it covers the pouring lip but this is very slight and hardly worth mentioning, the jug and label have some extremely minor surface marks and wear from use along with the patina of age that is to be expected and as they are in the totally original condition that they were found there is a slight residue on the inside of the jug so a good clean would enhance them greatly. Personally I think that this antique Whisky jug or noggin can still be used today and that it would make a superb addition to any collection  I also think that it looks fantastic considering that it's over 100 years old.

Please be aware that any dark shadows within the images are just reflections of the surroundings that could not be avoided during photography.

This Superb Antique 1911 Hallmarked Sterling Silver & Clear Cut Glass Whisky Jug or Noggin & Whisky Label from London is one of several pieces of antique silver that I have also listed.
