Item specifics

Condition: Used Part Brand: Delco
This is a Delco ignition switch that was used only by Cadillac in 1910 and again in 1912.  While the face and body of the 1911 switch are identical, the 1911 unit has one less wiring post protruding from the back.  Delco ignition systems helped Cadillac to establish a reputation for dependability in its early four cylinder Model 30's.  1910 Cadillacs used a coil and distributor in conjunction with dry cell batteries for starting.  Once the engine was running, the driver threw the switch to the other side so that the car ran on a Bosch magneto.  The 1912 Cadillac was the first production automobile with a "modern" starting and ignition system that incorporated lighting, a starter and a generator in a self-contained system.  While a rechargeable battery was used to power the starter, a set of dry cells was still used to provide ignition current when the starter was in use.  As with the 1910 models, the driver threw the switch to the other side once the engine was running.  Then the engine used electrical current from the generator for ignition.  Delco systems produced a fat, hot spark at the spark plugs, which resulted in easier starting and smoother running than was possible from most other ignition systems.

A brass plate is riveted to the face of the switch that indicates switch settings for OFF, BATTERY and MAGNETO.  At the center the plate reads" DELCO PAT. APPL'D FOR".  At the top of the switch face is a spring-loaded button that allows the driver to try to start the car with a single pulse from the dry cells without cranking, and with the switch in the "BATTERY" position.  This was a feature of most magneto ignition systems of the day.  While it started the car without cranking only occasionally, it was worth a try.

The switch appears to be complete and in good, restorable condition.  The switch snaps in and out of the three switches as it should.  The return spring on the spark button functions as it should.  There are three vibrating points inside the switch.  I'm sure dis-assembly and cleaning will be required as part of the restoration process.  Four cylinder Cadillacs, such as the 1910's and 1912's, are great favorites with antique automobile collectors.  An original ignition switch is seldom available for one of these fine cars.

The winning bidder pays all shipping and insurance costs and a $5.00 packaging fee.  I accept PayPal and other forms of payment.  I normally use Fedex Ground, but I will ship the switch per the wishes of the winning bidder.  Buyers from outside the US must use Paypal and must pay for insurance equal in value to the winning bid, US Priority Mail and the $5.00 packaging fee.
