1890 ANTIQUE VICTORIAN 1ST EDITION RELIGIOUS HARDCOVER HYMNAL SONG BOOK FOR CHURCHES & SUNDAY SCHOOLS TITLED "WINNOWED SONGS" edited & compiled BY IRA D. SANKEY PUBLISHED BY 'THE BIGLOW & MAIN CO." NEW YORK-CHICAGO & 'THE JOHN CHURCH CO.' CINCINNATI-NEW YORK. This book was published copyright 1890 and reads as such on top of title Preface page (please see close-up of this signature included). The book reads on front cover (and also in preface) that it is meant to be used for Church use in Sunday Schools and reads: FOR SUNDAY SCHOOLS. This lovely antique religious song book contains 224 pages, it comprises both American and foreign classical tunes, and composers such as Dykes, Hopkins, Sullivan, Barnby, and Hayne, Gospel songs and traditional hymns, and songs that were considered new in their day. The title "Winnowed Songs" uses the tern "winnowed" and it refers to the task of freeing grain of chaff by blowing or fanning with wind, this reference is made to the choosing of these religious songs in their careful selection and separation from less desirable ones. Condition of book is very good with no missing or loose pages, no rips, no creases or folded corners, no writing or marks on pages, pages are clean and in surprisingly very nice condition despite their being 123 years old (see pic of opened book), the covers are hardcover with a wonderful period graphic of two young boys dressed in Victorian clothing-collars and bows and charming expressions with lovely stylized Victorian lettering (see pics), the hard covers are attached to book and spine and binding with only some separation, the covers do have wear (see wear and the loss of paper explained) and wear to edges and corners (see pics) and covers show some paper loss and some spine loss at black outer edges (see pics included of outer black spine), some edge wear, binding is tight and intact and there are no loose pages or separation. Book measures approx. 7.25" long x 5.5" tall. Charming collectable religious antique 1890 Church & Sunday School Victorian song book for collection and display. smoke/pet free home. Book is hand-signed with an 1896 owner in ink on front end paper and reads: Mary B. Wilcox 1896.- smoke/pet free home. Thank you.
