1883 ca. Bible
Here's a BIG & beautiful antique Bible. It's heavy, weighs about 12 ½ pounds. Measures about 10 x 12 inches and about 4 inches thick. Published by John E. Potter, Philadelphia. On the 'Presented to' page, is the handwriting 'My Dear Mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Swann, her son T.M. Perkins, Dec 25, 1883'.
Has a section at the end for old photos, but there are no photos there. There is a loose sheet with some family data, with births; the other side of that page has one marriage, that of Samuel Swann Jr. in 1890. The earliest is Mr Samuel Swann born Dec 8th 1832. Then Mrs Elizabeth Swann Dec 10th 1840. Then William Swann Sept 2nd 1857. The last two are Thomas M. Perkins, born 1860, Mrs. Mary B. Rousel [?] June 2nd 1820. Apparently, Thomas Perkins' mother was a widow who married 2nd Samuel Swann?
I looked at the 1870 Petersburg, VA census and found this family, and they are all listed as 'Black', and all born by then were listed as born in Virginia. Surely Samuel Swann Sr. would have been born a slave (1830's), or perhaps a freed slave. It's rare to find birth dates for slaves. Since these entries were written ca. 1883, they may have been writing from memory, or from some other Bible, or loose papers, or etc etc.
This family needs some research to do them justice. I could only find time to do a little. From federal census records, Virginia, Petersburg City, Samuel Swann's occupation in 1870 was "Porter in a China Store". There is also listed in this census Mary Rowser born ca. 1830. Is she the same one listed on the Bible sheet as b. 1820? On the census, she is also 'B' (Black). There's also Octavie. In other words, the census record matches (pretty much) the Bible record.
The Bible was purchased in Petersburg, VA by this seller, so that's further confirmation about the family.
Many illustrations, etc. Please see the photos.
CONDITION is poor / below average, shows wear, loose spine, some foxing / stains, etc. as usual for these old Bibles.
