1869, Captain Charles Chapman, All About Ships, Models, Sailors, Dictionary, Illustrated

Chapman, Captain Charles. All About Ships and the Way to Make Models of Them. The Life and Duties of a Sailor; with Illustrations in Section of a China Clipper of 1869, and Description of her Outfit and Cargo. Also a Dictionary of Modern Sea Terms. London: Printed and sold by Edward Colyer, [1869]. Octavo, publisher’s gilt stamped green cloth, 394 +68 pages + 41 in-text engravings + 3 folding plates. WorldCat shows 1869 to be the earliest date as per library holdings, so presumed First Edition.

Nicely illustrated with many in-text engravings, this 1869 All About Ships contains information on making ship models, the life and duties of a sailor and a dictionary of modern sea terms. The narrative holds and excites, the dictionary succinctly informs, the many illustrations and the 3 folding plates give apt representation to the nautical thoughts…overall, this fascinating book offers the steady sea eye perspective of nautical life as experienced in the 1860s by Captain Charles Chapman.

Condition notes: Good. This octavo, measuring 8 ½ inches by 5 ½ inches, is bound in gilt decorated green cloth. The boards are somewhat rubbed, the text block spilt, and the first folding plate has several tears and some foxing. This illustrated 1869 All About Ships is in overall Good condition.
