‘ “I have never had a feeling politically that did not spring from the sentiments embodied in the Declaration of Independence, which gave liberty, not alone to the people of this country, but to the world in all future time. If the country cannot be saved without giving up that principle, I would rather be assassinated on the spot than surrender it.  I have said nothing but what I am willing to live and die by.” ‘ (George Bancroft reading from a speech given by Lincoln at Old Independence Hall, Philadelphia, shortly after his election to the presidency.) MEMORIAL ADDRESS
ON THE
LIFE AND CHARACTER
OF
ABRAHAM LINCOLN

DELIVERED AT THE REQUEST OF BOTH HOUSES OF THE CONGRESS OF AMERICA,
BEFORE THEM,
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
AT WASHINGTON,
ON THE 12TH OF FEBRUARY, 1866.

By George Bancroft
1866
"The Declaration of Independence was his compendium of political wisdom, the Life of Washington his constant study, and something of Jefferson and Madison reached him through Henry Clay, whom he honored from boyhood.  For the rest, from day to day, he lived the life of the American people, walked in its light, reasoned with its reason, thought with its power of thought, felt the beatings of its mighty heart, and so was in every way a child of nature, a child of the West, a child of America." (page 17)

This is a reflection on the life of Lincoln, his achievements, and his role in the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.   George Bancroft, U.S. historian, author of the 10 volume History of the United States, which became a standard work, and former Secretary of the Navy, was chosen to deliver the memorial address.

Condition: At 146 years old! this book is in solid Good condition. Spine cloth was completely chipped off and a thin strip of brown book binding tape applied to prevent further weakening. Board tips rubbed through and back board fore edge rubbed through. Gilt titling and design on front board still sharp.  Inside, all pages tightly bound and board hinges secure. Crack in seam of rear endpapers. No writing, marks or odors.  Moderate foxing throughout.  The highly sought after tissue-covered steel-engraved frontis of Lincoln is still present. The book measures 9"  x 6" and has 69 pages.

A Highly Collectible Memorial Tribute to Lincoln.
