1863 INDIAN HEAD CENT

Circulation Mintage: 48,840,000

In my opinion this 1863 Indian Head Cent should grade in the range of Good to Very Good.

Comments  some of the lower feathers can be discerned.  Date and legend are strong and bold.  Both rims are full and complete.  Some of the details of the wreath, arrows, and bow can be seen as are virtually all of the lines in the shield.

Grading of coins is very subjective - All grades I give are “In my opinion.”  If you disagree with any of “my opinions” please feel free to return any coin in its original, unopened 2x2 holder for a complete refund before leaving any feedback less than 5 stars. A satisfied customer is of more value to me than any sale.

Historical Notes: In 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation took effect with little real results nor did it free slaves in the non-rebelling states; in March Congress supported the forced removal of all Indians from the state of Kansas; draft riots broke out after the Conscription Act of March 3; in June the western counties of the state of Virginia was formally recognized as a separate state under the name of West Virginia; in October President Lincoln proclaimed the first national “day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.” By the middle of 1863 the paper money had depreciated so much that it took up to $150 to buy $100 worth of gold. Silver and gold coins struck in Philadelphia did not circulate but were used to purchase goods in export trade or stored in Treasury vaults.

I started collecting coins when I had my first paper route 50+ years ago. It started when I received my first Indian Head penny as part of the payment one day. I have been fascinated with older coins ever since. Now in my retirement it is time to pass them along and enjoy my gardening.
