The 1853 Three-Cents Silver has the second highest mintage of the series, thus collectors will have no difficulty in locating a nice example. Even Mint State examples are common, with the largest population of coins clustering at the MS-63 and MS-64 grades. Gems are slightly scarcer, but Superb examples become very rare (the December 2011 Population Report shows five MS-67s, and none finer).
High grade examples of this date show a rich, frosty luster. To my knowledge, no examples exist without some weakness on either some of the stars, the shield, or the outer border.
This is a beautiful coin for my collection.
