A CATALOG OF THE ENTIRE COLLECTION OF MANUSCRIPTS ON PAPER AND VELLUM OF THE MOST NOBLE WILLIAM MARQUIS OF LANSDOWNE Published by Leigh and S. Sotheby London 1807 Two volumes bound as one in the original marbled boards and leather spine. 9" X 5 3/4". Volume one consists of 444 pages of the "Burleigh State Papers" with 118 lots of multiple manuscripts in each lot. With most manuscripts from the Medieval period. Volume 2 starts at lot 120 and goes to lot 1,352 and consists of Royal letters and manuscripts, documents on vellum, Chinese manuscripts and drawings etc. and are mostly individual lots known as the "Shelburne Papers". 148 pages. With an introduction to the collection. With the two volumes both having title pages dated 1807. An eleven day auction with the order of auction on one page and with terms of the auction on another page. Complete with all leaves and pages and tightly bound. All leaves and pages are VG+ condition with NO soiling, stains, marks, chips except for several pencil marks and notations. BUT both marbled boards are detached and the leather spine is badly chipped and torn. (see picture 11) ALSO, most of the 4 page signatures are uncut on the top edges and must be cut in order to read the pages. (see all 12 pictures) This is a legal discard from the Cincinnati Public Library. I had one of the heads of the "Friends of the Library" connected to the rare book department sign a statement that it's a legal discard which is included in the sale. (see picture 12) It has an early library bookplate on the endpaper and old oval blind embossed library stamp on the title page with pencil catalog numbers. Was never put into circulation. The leaves are tightly bound. NO soiling, stains, marks etc. on the leaves and pages. With all leaves and pages. Complete and collated. |
