This collection, also called Letters to His Son on the Art of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman, comprises over 400 letters written beginning in 1737 or 1738 and continuing until his son's death in 1768. The majority of the letters were written between 1746 and 1754. The letters are written in French, English, and some in Latin. They are mostly instructive letters on such subjects as geography, history, and classical literature. Later letters, written when the author had become an established minor diplomat, deal largely with political matters.
Matthew Maty (1718–1776), originally Matthieu Maty, was a Dutch physician and writer of Huguenot background, and after migration to England secretary of the Royal Society and the second principal librarian of the British Museum.
At the time of his death Maty had nearly finished the Memoirs of the Earl of Chesterfield, work assisted by Solomon Dayrolles, which were completed by his son-in-law Justamond, and prefixed to the Miscellaneous Works, 2 vols., 1777 of Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield. Maty had been one of Chesterfield's executors.
Conditions are Good+/Very Good. Some wear to edges, little to boards/near edges, nice old bookplates (not sure if significant), light blemishing here and there, spotting to plates/pg. opposite, rest of pages/hinges/text blocks are very good for 235 years old!!!
When you think of buying a book, think about what you would normally pay for one at a normal bookstore nowadays, typically $20.00 to $30.00 for a book with no craftsmanship and history, no mystique, most that I try and sell are truly a work of art in of themselves, as well as a Great Investment that will continue to go up in value and not to mention the Centuries of Wisdom!!!
