Published : Nuremberg 1725.
Size : 22.5 x 19 inches 57.2 x 48.3 cm
Colouring : In original colours.
 
Belgium, Douai and Marienburg. In the centre is the county Hainaut which is boarded on the north and west by Flanders and Picardy, in the south is the Ardennes. In the east is the county of Namur. Hommans maps of the period are very detailed showing hundreds of villages and towns and large provincial cities such as Mons, Charleroi and Liège. The two cherubs in the title cartouche show the coat of arms of Hainaut. The colored administrative boundaries are typical stylistic features of the cartographer Johann Baptist Homann. At that time Hainaut, consisted of the Free County of Burgundy, Flanders, Luxembourg, Limburg, Brabant, Picardy and Holland. Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was the cartographer of The Holy Roman Empire from 1715 and a member of the Prussian Royal Academy of Sciences. His work would be continued after his death by a company called The Homman Heirs.
 
Condition : Paper slightly age-toned, generally in good condition. Some staining to lower centre, just into image.

After owning retail bookshops in Lucerne and Interlaken in Switzerland, as well as a online auction business, I am delighted to be back in the United Kingdom. 

 

Having studied at Oxford University in the early 1980s I was lucky enough to learn about the rare book trade by scuttling around the markets and auction houses of London at a time when it was still quite possible to discover "that find". Similarly I was able to hone my specialist interests in early photography, the history of science and Helvetica, something that I hope is still reflected in the items I offer.
