1716. VERY RARE MANUSCRIPT DUMFRIES TOWN NAME IN FULL.

An entire letter, very fine overall condition for its great age.
A very desirable rare item.
Dumfries Castle? to Liverpool.
On the front is a mss Post Pd
On the back is a very distinctive manuscript Dumfriess Pd in full early Scottish Town mark.
To date this type of manuscripted town mark is totally unrecorded for Dumfries.
A genuinely rare and much sought after item.

MANUSCRIPT TOWN MARKS:
( the forerunners to the handstruck cancellations. )
Numerous manuscript instructional endorsements occur on letters prior the general introduction of handstamps. In 1725 Archibald Douglas became Postmaster General and from that year onwards manuscript marks are found more frequently. There is some uniformity in the later manuscript markings, usually consisting of the first two or three letters of the office name along with the rate to be charged. Manuscript Town marks are exceedingly rare and highly prized by collectors
