Delineatio Oppidi Grijpswaldae
37 cm x 28 cm copperplate engraving, 38.5 cm x 33 cm sheet size, Nürnberg, engraved 1688, published 1696
We are pleased to offer this scarce and quite extraordinary original 17th century map/view of the bombardment of the town of Greifswald in what was then Swedish Pomerania by Brandenburg forces in 1659. The plate is from the posthumously published 1696 work De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo by the scholar and statesman Samuel von Pufendorf (1632-1694), the maps and plates for which were compiled by Erik Dahlberg (1625-1703) of Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna fame. Signature designates that the plate was engraved in 1688 by the Dutch master Willem Swidde (1666-1697). A remarkably detailed depiction of a 17th century mortar assault (note arcs of projectiles) the concentration of troops and coordinated attack seen here in fact had little effect, resulting in the loss of 16 houses in one corner of the town but in no way threatening Swedish control of the fortified town. Decorative and of historical interest, the print will make a handsome presentation if matted and framed.
A martial themed title cartouche with legend identifying letter-coded landmarks, troop positions etc.:
Brandenburg forces deliberately avoiding shelling the churches as the print illustrates:
With this large a deployment the possibility of an invasion into the city was hampered by logistical needs for food and other provisions:
