Called The Elector Bible for the
portrait plates of the The Prince-Electors (or simply Electors) of the
Holy Roman Empire. These princes and kings were the members of the
electoral college of the Holy Roman Empire, and had the power to name
and elect the Holy Roman Emperors. The Prince-electors (or simply
Electors) of the Holy Roman Empire (German: Kurfurst (About this sound
listen (help-info)), pl. Kurfursten, Latin: Princeps Elector) were the
members of the electoral college of the Holy Roman Empire, having the
function of electing the Holy Roman Emperors.
Very clean and truly a great c3rd edition specimen in original stamped pigleather binding over thick and heavy boards, catches of two clasps remain, cover leather lightly scuffed, spine with a small strip of loss, but hinges splitting, yet intact and pages in great shape. Both boards are still attached. Measures 17.5" tall, 11" wide, and nearly 6" thick-, this is unique and a true piece to remember. Endpapers are inscribed with family info, as shown, as well as manuscript notes. All pages are present and in decent shape, minus the first ten with some creasing, reinforcements at the binding, light edgeloss, and small manuscript notes and thumb soiling, also title and engraved title laid down on thicker backed paper. FULL of illustrations, many full page, many maps diagrams, genealogies and more... and some initials and woodcut devices in text. Engraved
plates also include full page standing portraits of the Electors. Text in German. Pages in amazing shape, lightly browned, but all bound ( a few loose but still bound) and most are clean, a few scattered stains, some minor edgewear as shown. True collectible and unique Bible, a must for the extreme German
Bible collector! One of a KIND! Good luck!

Title page of the Elector Bible
The Elector Bible is a German language folio-sized, Martin Luther translation of the new and old testament of the Bible that was authorized by Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha and printed by Wolfgang Endterin in Nuremberg,
Germany from 1641 to 1758. The earliest known edition to have survived
to this day is the Detmold edition printed in 1649. There were 14
editions of this Bible. Other names for this Bible are the Weimar, Ernestine, Kurfürstendamm, and Kurfürstenbibel.
By including a glossary explaining difficult words and passages this
Bible was aimed for the enlightenment of “ordinary people”.
Queen Christina of Sweden 1626–1689
The first edition of this Bible was printed starting in 1641 and had
no dedication. The second edition was printed starting in 1649 had an
engraved portrait of Queen Christina of Sweden
included with a 4 page dedication. The third edition was printed
starting in 1652 also was dedicated to Queen Christina of Sweden. The
forth edition was printed starting in 1662 after Christina’s conversion
to Catholicism. This action made it inappropriate to have her portrait
in the Bible and it was therefore replaced with a portrait of Ernst of
Saxony. The National Library of Sweden in Stockholm has 7 editions including the first 4 editions. In Isaac Vossius's (Queen Christina's Librarian) handwritten catalog of her books it is labeled as follows under Folio:
"Mart. Luthers Biblis, auff Verordnung Hertzog Ernsts. Nürnberg 1649".
