Mann's "1491" offers a contemporary, updated view of what the Americas and the American Indians were like prior to Europeans arriving on the continent. Mann brings into focus the contrasting (and clashing) views of what we were taught in school about American Indians and what the reality more likely may have been. Especially exciting was the discussion of the American Indian origins, the population numbers, the apparent sophistication of their culture, and their often overlooked contributions to later evolution of European culture in the Americas. I believe this book is a must read for anyone who wants to better understand American Indian culture or is interested in the history of the Americas.
