EARLY 1900  POSTCARD OF THE   S.S. "ONWARD" LEAVING FOLKESTONE HARBOUR

Card By Davidson Bros. 'Real Photographic Series'

The ONWARD was a 1671 gross ton, 22 knot channel ferry owned by South
Eastern & Chatham Railway. Capacity for 400 passengers. Built 1905 by Denny
& Bros., Dumbarton she was used on the Folkestone - Boulogne service. In
1908 she was in a head on collision with THE QUEEN, killing the bow lookout
man and returned to Folkestone. Sent to Denny Bros for repairs and out of
service for a month. Soon afterwards she carried the very first motor car
across the Channel. 1914-1918 used as a Folkestone - Boulogne troopship.
24th Sep.1918 scuttled at her moorings at Folkestone in order to prevent the
flames spreading when the pier caught fire , fell onto her port side and was
later hauled upright by a team of five steam locomotives in harness. The
enquiry blamed sabotage. 1920 The fire damaged hull was sold to the Isle of
Man Steam Packet Co., repaired and renamed MONA'S ISLE and used on the
Fleetwood or Liverpool to Douglas service. 1939 requisitioned and converted
to an Armed Boarding Vessel, later became an Anti-Aircraft Guard Ship at
Methil. 26th May 1940 made the first round trip in the evacuation from
Dunkirk and brought home 3000 troops. On her second trip, the next day she
was damaged by bombs and shellfire and withdrawn for repairs. 1946 returned
to her owners and used as a reserve steamer. 1948 scrapped at Milford Haven.
