This is a 21-inch handmade doll from the 1800's. My mother purchased it at a farm sale in mid-Missouri sometime in the late 1950's or erly 1960's. It is heavy, and weighs over 3.5 pounds. It is made of a light brown cotton and is hand sewn. You can feel grain in the arms, and the rest of the doll seems to be stuffed with sawdust - the doll is solid. The doll is discolored from use on the head, neck, and fingertips. The head has drawn on blue eyes and a faded mouth. Hair was also drawn on the doll and the head is yellowed either from use or from drawing on the hair. The outfit is not original and was made by Hope Smart, a doll doctor in Missouri out of old antique material. The doll has on a back button off white top with lace trim and front pin tucks and button front closure lace trim pants, all the cloths are machine made, but high quality.
This information comes from my mother - take it any way you want it. I am starting the bidding low - may the new owner love the doll as much as my mom did!
No letter with this doll, the information provided is from my mother, the owner for the past 50+ years. My mother had the clothes made for this doll sometime in the late 1970's. Hope from Hope's Doll Clinic in Boonville, MO made custom clothing for my mother's doll collection and did repairs.
My mother collected antique dolls and had period clothes made for them out of old fabric or clothing, which she purchased around mid-Missouri in the 1950's-1980's. Hope Smart was a "doll doctor" who created beautiful custom clothing for dolls, both hand stitched and machine made. She also repaired antique dolls. Hope lived and operated her business out of Boonville, Missouri. She passed away in the early 1990's.
I will be selling more dolls this week. My mother documented what she had done to her dolls and we will fully disclose what we know and send along any letters, notes, or photos to accompany the dolls to their new homes. Let me know if you have any questions!
Doll will come well wrapped - enjoy!
