Great little color printer for everyday snapshot use. 4 X 6 inch finished print is clear and bright. Because this uses special paper and disublimation ribbon, there is no color running problem from moisture as there is with ink jet copy. Small printer footprint makes desktop placement convenient. Paper tray does extend out about 8 inches but when done printing, is removable to restore space. Unfortunately, printer is obsolete and paper/ribbon stock is getting hard to find.

I got my Dell 540 Photo Thermal Printer off EBay used. I got it quickly and in great shape . I don't like having to call or e-mail Dell to get my printer packages - but that is the only draw-back to using this printer. It is compact and easy to use. I find the quality of the pictures to be very good and I'd recommend this printer to anyone with a digital camera - I have only used it with my memory cards and not connected to my computer as I have a printer already with my computer.
Love the fact that you don't even need a computer hooked up to the 540 Photo Printer. It can be a stand alone unit if you want it to be. Photo color quality is amazing! This printer is very simple to setup and use. Only drawback is that you have to order straight from Dell if you need ink & photo paper for it. Major retail electronic stores don't cary replacement or refills for it. Other then that it's a great product and very usefull when you want to print your own photos right from home.
I really like this printer but have had trouble with it working for very long. My first one I bought new from Dell and it lasted a couple of years with occasional use. Then I bought one on E-bay (supposedly new) and it lasted about 6 months. I bought another one on E-bay and it didn't work at all from day one but I only paid a penny for it (shipping $12.00). Now I have another one from E-bay and it seems to be working fine. I keep buying them because they are easy to use and I had several packs of paper and ink cartridges for the Dell that I want to use up. Two of the one I bought on R-bay that claimed to be new or barely used had the express code scrapped off the bottom so if you have a problem with it you cannot call Dell for help. They will not talk to you without the express code.
I have the Easyshare DX 6490 and the printer. My brother bought the same camera but no printer so he would bring his stuff to me to print. I got a great deal on a brand new printer and I gave it to my brother for Christmas. It's easy to use and he loves it! And, I don't have to print his photos anymore.
