Working at Home with Young Children

The dream to work from home is a dream that can be achieved. With small children in tow, that dream can be slightly difficult to obtain at times, but it is possible. Knowing limitations and how to organize time is part of this process.

Being Organized

What does being organized mean for a mother? It can mean quite a few things depending upon who is being asked. It could be keeping a straight house or tight schedule. When working from home, all of the duties are on a mother. Housework, paying bills, errands, taking care of children, and working can be quite a bit to take on, especially if it is a single mother trying to accomplish this.  It is possible though by following a few key guidelines.

Setting work hours is one thing that needs to be done. Since working from home does offer more flexibility the hours can be flexible, depending on what the job is. For those who choose to go the freelance route, then long hours may need to be put in at nighttime to make up for the day. For those who are in more of a service industry dealing with customers though, business hours is mandatory. During these business hours, it is best to have something for small children to do or to train them by simple signs using colors to let them know when it is acceptable to interrupt.

Following a strict schedule may also be necessary for some women. This could mean scheduled times to eat, sleep, and even shower. The schedule needs to be followed specifically though to ensure happy children as well. This means that there will be times where schedules need to be flipped to accommodate certain aspects of the family life or even in case an emergency arises. It is better in the long run to schedule more time than actually needed to make sure all things are taken care of.

The family and work balance is a huge part of why women want to work at home. There needs to be lines drawn though. Work, as much as some may say don’t take up their whole time, can take up quite a bit. To fix this problem, guidelines need to be set for the mother and children. These guidelines could be anything that the family deems appropriate. One important rule though is that work should never interfere with family life and time.

To make sure it doesn’t interfere, a simple strategy can be set. The business hours that are set need to be the business hours only. This means that once the work day is over, there shouldn’t be going out to check a few e-mails, look at an accounting issue, or even talk to customers. If it wasn’t finished while the working hours were in session than it should wait till the next time work is scheduled.  Family time should be upheld to the highest degree.

If considering working from home, it can be such a rewarding experience. Even when times get tough, and they will it is important to always think about why the decision was made to work at home. This can provide motivation especially if things seem slow. As mothers, it is important to take care of our family. Working at home, as difficult as it can be, is an experience that can only become greater.
