Kobe Bryant has a new nickname! Get your Lakers Jersey
. Put a #8 on it. And put "Black Mamba" on the back. ESPN's Bill Simmons and
Ric Bucher of ESPN magazine recently highlight Kobe Bryant's new
self-proclaimed nickname of "Black Mamba" - which is ripped right out
of Kill Bill vol 2. For what its worth, the Black Mamba is having a great 2005-2006 season so far!
"Granted, there's still a dark side that Bryant embraces. He's known in his inner circle as Mamba, which, he is happy to explain, is a kind of snake that can grow to 13 feet and is one of the world's quickest, and one of the most venomous, serpents. He referred to this summer as the 'blackout,' in which the snake grew a new skin through a seven-days-a-week conditioning program.
"Kobe explaining his new nickname: 'The mamba can strike with 99 percent accuracy at maximum speed, in rapid succession. That's the kind of basketball precision I want to have. Not being able to train the last two summers, I was in a gunfight with a rusty butter knife. I did my share of killing, but I was just fighting to survive."
UPDATE: Since this guide was written, Kobe Bryant officially became The
Mamba - turning in the best month-long performance by any NBA player
with a nickname of a snake ever. In fact, the Mamba blew up for 81
venomous points against the Toronto Raptors in January - becoming only
the second player ever to break 80 points and the first nba player ever
to do so with a self-provided nickname beginning with an M and ending
in an AMBA.
About The Mamba: From Kill Bill
Black Mamba is the codename of The Bride in the film Kill Bill.Kill Bill Quote: The Mamba
Elle Driver: The venom of a black mamba can kill a human in four hours, if, say, bitten on the ankle or the thumb. However, a bite to the face or torso can bring death from paralysis within 20 minutes. Now, you should listen to this, 'cause this concerns you. The amount of venom that can be delivered from a single bite can be gargantuan. You know, I've always liked that word..."gargantuan"... so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence. If not treated quickly with antivenom, 10 to 15 milligrams can be fatal to human beings. However, the black mamba can deliver as much as 100 to 400 milligrams of venom from a single bite.
About the Mamba: The Black Mamba Snake
From Wikipedia: Mambas are tree dwelling extremely rapidly moving snakes of Africa. They are highly venomous, their venom containing neurotoxins, which can be fatal to humans without access to proper first aid and subsequent antivenom treatment. The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is the largest venomous snake in Africa, with an average length around 8 feet (2.5 m), but may grow to over 14 feet (4.5 m). It got its name because of the black inside of its mouth; the actual color of the skin is varied: dull yellowish-green to a gun-metal grey. It is one of the fastest snakes in the world, capable of going 10 to 12 mph (16 to 20 km/h). The black mamba is a territorial snake and, while normally retreating from danger, can become very aggressive if it feels threatened, especially if the threat is between the snake and its lair.
