I thought I would take a moment to write a guide about one of the most popular girl's doll lines of the 1980's, Strawberry Shortcake.
I hope that this guide will aid the collector who is just starting to get their Shortcake Collection together and may not be sure what parts go with what doll.
Strawberry Shortcake dolls first began in 1979, and continued being made until the mid 1980's.
The dolls were all named after berries and other sweet things, and were each scented to smell like their name.
They were later revived in 1991 by a different toy manufacturer, but only lasted 2 years.
They were brought back again in 2002 (more than 20 years after their first appearance) and are still available in stores.
Even the very first line of dolls came in variations (such as Party Pleasers or Baby versions), but this guide will help you to identify the typical Strawberry Shortcake (SSC) Character, their proper clothing and accessories and their proper pet.
THE ORIGINAL 13 STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE CHARACTERS & THEIR PETS:
Strawberry Shortcake. She has straight, red-brown hair. Strawberry wears a large pink hat with a red embroidered strawberry on top, and little strawberries printed on the hat. She wears a red dress with a white apron. She wears striped green and white tights and brown shoes. Her pet is a cat named Custard. The cat is pink with white polka dots.
Huckleberry Pie. The only boy in Strawberryland. He has straight, red-brown hair. Huckleberry wears a large yellow rubbery hat with an embroidered bunch of huckleberries glued on the front. He wears a light purple shirt, blue overalls, a green and white striped neck scarf and brown shoes. His pet is a dog named Pupcake. The dog is brown with green and white striped ears.
Raspberry Tart. She has longer, curly pink hair. Raspberry wears a large pink hat with an embroidered raspberry on the top and a green and white striped panel in front that sort of hangs down like a leaf. She wears a pink top with pinky-purple checkered arms and a lacey panel in front and wears solid dark pink color shorts. She wears green and white striped tights and pinky-purple shoes. Her pet is a monkey named Rhubarb. It is brown and pink.
Blueberry Muffin. Her straight light blue hair is styled in 2 pigtails to the sides and held with light purple ribbon. Blueberry wears a large rubbery blue hat with an embroidered bunch of blueberries glued on the front that is tied below the chip with a light purple ribbon. She wears a solid color light blue dress with blue and white checkered arms. She wears green and white striped tights and blue shoes. Her pet is a mouse named Cheesecake. It is light yellow, with blue accents and a blue flower for a nose.
Angel Cake. Angel has longer white hair, with attached gold ribbons in her hair and a strip of tghe gold ribbon goes across her forehead like a headband. She wears a light aqua dress that has a white collar and a light purple bow. She wears green and white striped tights and purple shoes. Her pet is a purple skunk named Souffle.
Lemon Meringue. She has curly yellow hair. Lemon wears a white, slightly pointed hat, with a light green stripe along the brim and 2 pink flowers. She wears a light yellow dress with darker yellow polkadots. She has green and white striped tights and yellow shoes. Her pet is a green frog names Frappe.
Lime Chiffon. She has green, slightly curled hair. Lime wears a light pink hat (that rather looks like an upside-down ice cream cone) with a yellow ribbon on the top. She has a pale green dress with white flowers along the bottom. She wears green and white striped tights and pinky-brown shoes. Her pet is a green and pink parrot called Parfait.
Orange Blossom. Orange is the only dark-skinned doll. She has wavy black hair. She wears a yellow and orange hat with an embroidered white blossom on top. She wears a yellow dress with a tiny white flower print and an orange frill at the neck of the dress. She wears green and white striped tights and orange shoes. Her pet is an oversized yellow and orange butterfly named Marmalade.
Cherry Cuddler. Cherry is one of the younger kids of Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. She has pink hair that is mostly covered by her hat. She has a dark pink hat with scalloped edges and a flocked green leaf on top. She wears a white dress with 2 red cherries on the front. She wears green and white striped tights and pink flocked slippers. Her pet is a white goose wearing a red bonnet, called Gooseberry.
Apricot. Apricot is one of the younger kids of Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. Her hair is white and is mostly covered by her hat. She wears a flocked peach colored hat with a blue flocked leaf on top. She wears a 1piece jumpsuit that has peach arms and white overalls and peach cuffs. She wears blue slippers (no tights). Her pet is a white rabbit named Hopsalot.
Apple Dumplin. Apple is one of the younger kids of Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. Some people have argued that Apple might be a boy, not a girl. She has orange hair and has freckles on her cheeks. Apple wears a yellow hat with green polkadots. She wears a 1 pc yellow jumpsuit with a red apple embroidered on the front, and green and white striped slippers (bare legs, no tights). Her pet is a green turtle named TeaTime.
Buttercookie. Buttercookie is probably the youngest kid in Strawberryland and is smaller than the others. She has yellow hair that is mostly covered by her hat. Buttercookie wears a large yellow flocked bonnet with a white bow on the front. She has a 1pc jumpsuit that has yellow arms and a white body with yellow flowers on it. Her pet is a bear named Jellybear. He is yellow with white hair and belly.
AND...
The Purple Pieman. The Purple Pieman is the "bad guy" of Strawberryland, and is an adult. He wishes to steal the Strawberryland berries to make into a pie. He is much larger than the other dolls and has long arms and legs. He has grey-white hair and a long, wispy purple moustache. He wears a bakers hat that is light purple on top and checkered dark purple and blue on the band. He wears a blue short-sleeved shirt with a long white baker's apron and carries a brown plastic spoon. His pants and shoes are permanantly attached (painted on) and are dark purple. He has a pet dark purple crow named Cackle, the blackberry bird (which can perch on his arm).
These are the original Strawberry Shortcake characters.
After a few successful years, more characters were created and made into dolls.
