When we are in the water we are losing body heat.
When you are picking out a wetsuit, remember the bigger the number like 6.5mm or 7mm the warmer the suit will be. If you are in a creek and wearing a 3mm wetsuit you are not going to last very long in that environment. We lose body heat in water 20 times faster than we do in air. If you are wearing a thick wetsuit but not wearing a hood, gloves or boots you are going to be cold. These are all the main places we lose our body heat from. You also will want your wetsuit to be pretty snug on you, but not cutting off your circulation.
If you are wearing one that is too big, water is just going to flow in and out of it. Basically the way a wetsuit works, is when you get in the water, the little bit of water that gets into the suit your body heats that up. If you have a big flow of water in and out of your suit, your body can't keep up with that, resulting you in getting cold.
There are basically two kinds of suits, jumpsuits which are a one piece suit, and farmer johns which are a two piece suit. Farmer john suits have the piece that you wear like pants that comes up over your shoulders. Then you put the jacket on over that. So if you are wearing a 6.5mm farmer john suit, right in your core area from your neck, down to your thighs you will have 13mm of neoprene keeping you warm.
Think about this, you wouldn't go out in the snow without a hat, gloves or boots, why would you try and go underwater without these items?
