About Stainless Flatware
Standard Flatware Needs
Registering for Flatware
When young couples begin their lives together, an important component is buying and furnishing their home with Flatware and Silverware. I will discuss standard flatware needs and how to choose and register for flatware for all of your dining needs.
When deciding on your perfect flatware pattern, it is important to decide whether or not you need one or two sets of flatware. Many homes have two sets. One is used for everyday use and the other is used for special occassions or special dinners. For everyday flatware it is important to buy high quality flatware that will withstand daily use and washing. Special occassion flatware can be elaborate and fancy and some choose sterling silver, although many manufacturers make beautiful, fancy stainless steel flatware.
If you decide to only purchase one set, make sure it will transition well from casual everyday dining to fancy formal dining.. Once you determine how many sets you need, pick a pattern that suits your style. One thing to consider when selecting a pattern is how well the pattern goes with your dinnerware, dishes and crystal glasses. A good rule of thumb when picking flatware that goes well with crystal and chine is that one of the three should contrast with the other two in the amount of decoration. If you have very ornate fancy silverware you should choose a more simple dinnerware or crystal.
How much do you need?
For most people, an everday set can be a set that serves 8. When buying an everyday set, it's possible to buy a boxed set that includes service for 8 and a few serving pieces. For your fancy silver and stainless, a simple rule of thumb is as follows:
- Teaspoons 16
- Place Fork 8
- Place Knife 8
- Salad Fork 8
- Place Spoon 8
- Iced Beverage Spoon 8
- Cocktail Oyster Fork 8
- Butter serving knife 1
- Cold Meat Fork 2
- Gravy Ladle 1
- Pastry Server 1
- Sugar spoon 1
- Tablespoon 2
- Pierced Tablespoon 1
