REVO SUNGLASSES STOCK NUMBERS
I am writing this to help others like myself gain an understanding to the stock numbers printed on the wings/ends of Revo Sunglasses.
Revo used stock numbers on all new stock sunglass frames. The first number was the frame style and the second number represented the lense color. This is how the optical shop ordered Revo sunglasses, by frame number and lense color. Many so called Revo dealers on Ebay have been getting over on the unaware public for some time. Realize that most Revo resellers of vintage sunglasses have their own websites and sell the really great material for top dollar on their own sites, they sell off their junk on Ebay. Revo manufactured replacement ends/wings and other parts that were not marked with numbers. WHY? There were at least eight different lense colors one part could be manufactured for all eight by not marking the replacement wings/ends with a code. Revo marked the replaced parts with the REVO name and sometimes the country of origin where they were manufactured.. The reason this is so important is that many REVO resellers on Ebay are putting together REVO sunglasses with replacement parts and calling them AUTHENTIC. When a seller does not show the original arms/wings he is likely hiding the fact that he used replaced parts. These parts may or may not have been intended for the glasses he is selling.
Why is this so important? In the pics above I have tried to show two very similar vintage models of Revo sunglasses. The larger ones are 974-08 the small glasses 953-08..I bought these in the late 1980's from my optometrist so they are original. its tough for you to see but the two frames are almost identical the arms/wings are slightly thicker on the 974-08 model.. Eyeglasses are made to fall on center so when a slightly different end/wing is used to replace the original the glasses do not function the way they are supposed to. They become off center. Most of these Revo resellers rebuild their own sunglasses. They are not opticians. You wouldn't want a plumber working on your automobile engine, you would want a mechanic. Worst of all, the facts about rebuilding are always hidden by these RESELLERS.
AUTHENTIC Revos have a DECREASED value when they are rebuilt. So ask before you buy are the wings/ends marked. Make sure you know your lense color coding this goes from 01 to 08 Some take several pair apart to make one good pair and the numbers may not match the lense colors. Get to know the codes and model numbers there are several good websites that sell authentic vintage Revo sunglasses online. These sights generally provide good photos and include information on condition and even in some cases on replaced parts. They always mark the model numbers and show pics. Learn your model numbers and do not fall for the rebuilds that are being sold as AUTHENTIC. Hopefully now you can make an educated decision before making a major purchase. I am not informed enough about other manufacturers but it is likey rebuilds are being done on many levels..
