"New" GPS and warranties, valid or not?

Many times sellers list an item as new with warranty. The trouble is, if they are not an authorized dealer most often these warranties are worthless! For example from Garmin's GPS site this is noted.    *   Products sold through online auctions  : Products sold through online auctions are not eligible for rebates or other special offers from Garmin. Pay Pal receipts will not be accepted. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification. To obtain warranty service an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required. Garmin will not replace missing components from any package purchased through an online auction.

Certainly this is not true in all cases, but it pays to check the manufactures site of the item you wish to bid/buy and see if they will honor an auction warranty. My experience shows 98% do not, unless the seller is an authorized dealer for that product AND can produce you a "store" receipt.

So, be carefull when the seller states >under warranty< most often it is not. Sadly you will find that out too late. As always, a smart buyer does their homework.

Hope this helps some people from getting burned on supposed warranties!
