Partylite Mosaic: What it is, What it isn't

There are a lot of sellers claiming to have a piece from the retired PartyLite Mosaic collection. Many times, however, these are not authentic and can be quite confusing to the buyer. Worse still, eBay has no standard by which to determine whether or not a seller has an authentic piece, and as such, many sellers are getting away with search manipulation and unfair listing practices.  This is the first in a series of primers on what to look for in an authentic piece from the PartyLite Mosaic collection.

 The Mosaic Collection Overview

There are several characteristics that are indicative of the PartyLite Mosaic collection. The most obvious identifyers are also the easiest to alter: the box, the label and the product name.

The Box

PartyLite has redesigned their packaging at least three times since the introduction of the Mosaic collection. The first box was the "plain brown" flat (no gloss) corrugated packaging box, similar in style to the current box used for their 3-wick candles. It is brown, with black lettering in multiple languages and the old style Partylite 4 candle logo as pictured below:

The next evolution of the box is the "grey edition" packaging box.  This box uses the same old style 4 candle logo, but in green, not black, and the box is a glossy grey colored corrugated box:

The present evolution is the "mint green" edition box. This corrugated box has a mint green semi-gloss appearance and the current stylized PartyLite 3 candles on a tray logo:

There is some speculation that PartyLite sold the Mosaic collection in a white box, but as of this writing, no evidence has been found to support that claim. Partylite did use a white box for many of it's silk/floral pieces and glassware in the late 1980's that had the green old style logo on it, but we have found no Mosaic glass ware in that type of packaging to date. If you have one, please send us a picture and we'll include it here.

The Label

PartyLite began in the 1970's and the original logo was simply a script version of the PartyLite name, black ink on a white field. No known Mosaic pieces were released with this label. The most common example is the second iteration of the PartyLite label, the round, silver/grey label with the green old style 4 candle logo, it should have manufacturer information (Made in Romania):

This label looks white in the picture, but it's a metallic silver.

PartyLite also has a gold and black label (or gold on gold) that was used exclusively on the candles themselves. This was NEVER used on a piece of glassware:

This is the current three candle on a tray design, embossed on a gold sticker. This was only used on the pillar products, never on glassware.

The most recent sticker/label is square with the mint green field and the modernized 3 candles on a tray logo. It will also have manufacturing information on it that reads "made in Romania". A piece with this sticker should come in a Mint Green box, as they were released at the same time.

The Product Name

The Partylite Mosaic Collection featured a couple of different product names, particularly the "tiffany" tealight holder, which was one of the earlier pieces in the collection. At this writing all pieces but the Mosaic jar candle shade have been retired. This may change, however, since several pieces were retired and then reintroduced. Several other similar creations are often mistakenly called mosaic, because the style of manufacture is similar. Here are the most common culprits:

The Calypso: Clear glass pieces that were swirled in a style similar to the mosaic, but with gold instead of black lines. PartyLite made numerous pieces including a Black and Gold ornament, and Angel hurricane shade, and a hurricane shade without the angel design.
The Calypso Blue: Cobalt blue glass, swirled with platinum/silver lines. PartyLite made several pieces including a candle globe and an ornament in this style.
The Tiffany tealight holder: This is a Mosaic collection piece. It was named differently to distinguish it from the other mosaic tealight/votive holders already in the collection.

Anything made with Cobalt Blue lines drizzeld on the glass were NEVER manufactured for PartyLite. examine your glassware closely. At arms length, it may be difficult to tell the blue glass lines from the black glass lines. We ourselves use the cobalt blue lines to distinguish our Mosaic candle holders from the original Party Lite collection pieces.

There are several manufacturers of this style of glass. The authentic PartyLite pieces are handmade in Romania, not China.
