I get some calls and emails sometimes about no video issues, and as an honest person, I feel the right way to do things is better than a profitable way, as what comes around goes around. I wanted to share a simple set of instructions for troubleshooting No Video issues without opening your PS3 console.
First, check your connections. Obvious, I know, but make sure that its plugged in firmly, and remove and plug back in. Also examine the cable and port itself for obvious signs of physical damage. If you have another cable around, try that. (HDMI are especially fragile in my experience doesn't take much to bend it at all- you could just have moved the console a little bit and that could do it) PS3s are supposed to auto detect HDMI connection, but for some reason will not auto detect AV cables.
The next step would be to preform a video reset. Its very simple, just turn off the console in the back (or unplug for slims), and then turn it on so you see the red standby light. Then just press and HOLD the power button,- you will hear one beep when you turn it on, just keep holding it.. I think it takes about 10-15 sec, then you will hear a double beep with the screen flicker, keep holding it, then it will beep and turn off. Now turn it back on and see if that works!
Now, this is not a 'fix all' guide to no video, but this will determine if your RSX has gone bad or not in most cases. And I personally try resetting 5 times before giving up. Aside from these instructions, its my believe that the only other fix for no video would be replacing the RSX itself. Though you have to keep in mind that the PS3 is a complicated machine, with thousands of compoents when you break it down, so there is ALWAYS the possibility it could be something else, so experience is a huge advantage. Contact me if you would like to arrange for repair! Thanks for checking out my first guide, I hope to make many more!
