I was looking for an SVHS recording deck for about six months. I purchased four (4), no lie - FOUR used SVHS decks that were advertised as "Excellent", or "good condition", but none was any good because all the SVHS decks out there are now very old since they are a dying format.
Then I discovered the Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U. This is a new deck made recently in what could be called VHS's Last Gasp. This deck is designed to record digitally onto video cassettes of the VHS design, and also records onto SVHS and VHS formats. You need the correct tape for each format, and DVHS tapes are now running around $10 each. Youch!
But if, like me, you just wanted a hi-quality unit to record in SVHS (for whatever reason you have for wanting to record in SVHS), then this is the ONLY deck out there for you. I've had mine for about a month, and it records VERY good images! After seeing so many old, dirty and worn-out SVHS decks I'd forgotten what a properly tuned SVHS deck will do.
This deck has two signal outputs in the back, which is very convenient. It has a firewire input, which I have not used since I
do not use it for digital recording. It has a feature-packed remote control with a jog/shuttle knob right on it. Rewind is super-fast. One-touch recording starts the deck at the push of a button, in case you want to suddenly catch a TV show that you didn't know was on until the last second.
This deck is a little bit larger than typical VHS decks, but about the same size as professional SVHS decks.
If you need an SVHS deck, don't go used! You're buying someone else's problem. (A good condition used AG-1980, for example, will run about $600-1000 on ebay.) Another problem you'll encounter are scammers who advertise a working, good condition unit, but ship you a broken unit in a damaged box. They will then want you to help them collect the shipping insurance. Unless you know the seller as a reliable, honest dealer, don't trust a used, 10 year-old SVHS deck.
Despite the fact that this Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U deck is great for what it does, the format is a goner and I'm sure that they won't be making anymore. Get one while you can if you think you'll need it.
