Middle Earth CCG Rarity List : The Wizards

Lots of people list their Middle Earth CCG cards saying that they don't know what they have, what are the rares, etc.  There are plenty of good card lists out there on the web, all you have to do is search a little bit.  To save you the trouble, here is a start of a rarity list for Middle Earth : The Wizards.  At the moment it has no example images, and only lists rare and fixed cards.  I'll try to complete it later.

Rarity

The Wizards release of the Middle Earth CCG was sold in booster packs of 15 cards, and in starter decks.  The breakdown of rarity was more complicated than other games like Magic the Gathering, however.

  • Rare : one per booster, 3 per starter.  These are the most valuable.  121 different cards.
  • Fixed : only in starters; they're in a small sealed packet of cards inside the starter deck box, separate from the rest.  There were 5 different types of sealed packets, one for each of the 5 wizards; the contents of the packet are non-random, and are composed of highly playable cards that work well together.  Next to rares, these are the most valuable, but are typically bought and sold in small lots.  58 different cards.
  • Uncommon : three per booster, ?? per starter.  Generally not valuable except in sets or large lots, with a few exceptions.  121 different cards.
  • Commons : Like most games, not valuable on their own, but can be worth a little bit in a full set.  184 different cards.

Types

There are 5 different types of cards in the game:
  • Characters - flaming eye on back, blue border on face (except for the five Wizards - Alatar, Gandalf, Pallando, Radagast and Saruman - they had different color borders, but otherwise look like the blue border character cards)
  • Hazards - flaming eye on back, charcoal border on face
  • Regions - map on back, detail of a map on the face with very little text
  • Resources - flaming eye on back, copper border on face
  • Sites - map on back, white border on face
The main thing to know is that Region cards are generally not worth much - there are only common Regions, no rare, uncommon or fixed ones.  They stopped printing them after this release of the game, since it was much more convenient to consult a map of Middle Earth than to use the region cards.  Some collectors need them to complete a set, but much of the demand for cards is being driven by players, and they could care less about the regions.

Resources can be divided into various types (events, items, factions, etc), and similarly with Hazards (events, creatures).  Crucial for the game, these distinctions don't really mean much if you're collecting or selling.  Good rares are worth something no matter what type, and mediocre ones, not so much, regardless of type.
