Get a VMI BEFORE you buy a used Mercedes Benz built between 2000-2006
Don't buy your Mercedes without one!
I have written several articles about the problems with Mercedes
cars built during 2000-2005. The Mercedes Corp. is aware of
the problems, but they still continue to sell used Mercedes on
Ebay and across the country at dealerships...knowing full well
that the cars have significant problems. Mercedes has spent over 1/2 Billion to buy back some of it's defective cars, and for repairs on faulty ones. The problem ocurred because of the wiring. Mercedes states that the problem is not with the 2006 models, it is with the cars already sold and manufactured between 2000 and 2005.
I know this to be true from first hand experience. I bought a 2002 CLK and a 2003 S430 which were continually breaking down. I got rid of them within 4 months out of concern for the safety of my wife and myself and passengers.
Here's why this is a big problem....a problem which Mercedes has grown tired of dealing with: when there is an electrical issue with a car, any mechanic will tell you that you can chase electrical problems forever without ever fixing the problem. These electrical problems will show up on the VMI for your Mercedes. I didn't know that until I went to trade them in, and was offered $23,000 LESS than I had just paid for them 4 months earlier. Once again, Mercedes has grown tired of dealing with these problem cars, and will do anything to make you think that your car is the first one that they have ever seen with the problem.
Buying a used Mercedes is not the exciting experience it once
was.
Here is what you need to have BEFORE you purchase a used Mercedes,
including one under warranty, and even the Starmarked Certified
Pre Owned Mercedes.
You need a recent copy of the VMI for that car. A VMI is
the Vehicle Master Inquiry. It is online at all Mercedes
dealerships. If buying from a private party, you can call
a Mercedes dealership and give them the VIN and have the VMI
printed out. If buying online, have them fax or email you the VMI.
DO NOT RELY ON CARFAX WHEN BUYING A USED MERCEDES!
Carfax.com gets data mostly from public records. It has NO IDEA of
the repairs done to a vehicle at the dealership. That's because
the dealership doesn't report that type of information to CarFax.
That's why each Mercedes has it's own VMI and why you need
to look at it before you spend your money.
If you see some repairs on the VMI which are electrical related,
steer clear of that vehicle. No matter how good the price, and how beautiful the car, don't buy it!!!!
Any honest Mercedes mechanic will tell you that the electrical problems
on these cars simply cannot be fixed permanently.
If you get a 'clean' VMI, and the car has at least 10K miles on
it, you are probably safe to buy it.
What about Certified Pre Owned warranties?
CPO warranties are fine, but they do NOT take the place of a VMI by any means. They will cover the repairs on a defective Mercedes.
But do you have time to drop off your vehicle
and to wait for the repairs to be done several times each month?
Is that why you bought your beautiful used Mercedes?
Many Mercedes owners buy for the looks, the durability, and
the luxury. These days, many are having to settle for 2 out of 3.
Ask the next Mercedes owner you spot in a parking lot how much service has been done on their car.
But....don't take my word for it!
