LCD Flat Panel Display Cleaning Tips

Care and cleaning for your Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) flat panel screen is a simple process, yet not many people know the proper way to clean these displays. This guide will provide the basics for safely cleaning these delicate surfaces.

LCD surfaces are great for displaying all of your stunning graphics and award winning writings, but they're also notorious for displaying fingerprints and other smudges. Most people either don't bother cleaning their LCDs (for fear of damaging the surface) or use cleaning solvents (such as Windex) that will damage the LCD surface. Here is the simple way to clean any LCD surface without running the risk of damaging your display.

Clean your display surface with plain old rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. The LCD surface is made of plastic and can be damaged by using solvents. I use a smal squirt bottle to dispense the alcohol, but it works just as well if you put the alcohol on the paper towel and then clean your LCD. The most effective way to wipe is in a circular motion this way you overlap areas and are able to remove smudges and dirt from the display surface.

If your display surface has any sort of residue on it, you can safely use Goo Gone to remove it. Again use a paper towel to apply the Goo Gone to your display and rub in a circular motion to remove the residue. I suggest you apply a small amount of Goo Gone on a paper towel and test a small area of your display to make sure that it doesn't cause any problems with your display surface. I use Goo Gone on my PowerBook displays all the time and have never had a problem.

After removing the smudges, dirt or residue from the display, I then use a microfiber cloth (or any other lint free cloth) to polish the display surface. After that, the display will look like new, until the first time you put your finger on the display!
