Internet safety software review #1 - Cyber Sentinel

We need to be sure our children and youth truly safe online!  It is not possible or practical for a parent to watch all of our children's Internet surfing habits.  Thankfully their are many programs available to help, but which ones are good? We had a scarey situation of our own, and with ten kids, we jumped on finding help! We have tested and approved five great Internet safety software solutions.  These programs can bring minor to maximum levels of safety from Internet predators, pedophiles, pornography and more!  The programs are from low to moderate price points that can provide you an affordable solution to Internet safety for your entire family.

Review Number 1 - Cyber Sentinel 3.0

If you are concerned about Internet safety for your child Cyber Sentinel (CS) is a good starting point. As the other products we recommend CS can be operated in visible or stealth mode. In stealth mode CS runs silently in the background. A password controlled console is accessible for the CS manager that is also hidden so no user can locate it without knowing exactly how to operate the system.

The Cyber Sentinel (CS) set-up and console are very easy to manage. The console allows parents to view screen captures, websites visited and chat views. All are based upon the settings parents select for their child or situation. Cyber Sentinel is not able to be set differently for different users of a particular computer so keep this in mind during setup. If you have more than one user on a computer, as we do in our house, it should be set up based upon the needs of the youngest user or the child or you are most concerned about while online.

CS can be set to capture screen shots, warn the user of violations and/or close programs based upon your settings. Parents can set a family computer use policy that can be set to be displayed at startup if you choose. The captured screen shots are perfect images of whatever the other person was viewing at the time. They can be viewed and deleted if found to be innocent or left on the hard drive for viewing again to be dealt with at your discretion.

CS has a built in child predator library that can be set to less or more restrictive. Their built in library is not accessible to view and no list of words is available for a parent to look at.

Parents can add their own list of keywords for their own added library. This is a great feature! CS will pick up any word and send warnings to the current user and/or emails to you of violations of these keywords. Parents, choose your words carefully! If your word is a portion of another word it will pick up every instance. (For instance, a parent enters Sue in the library and CS captures ensue, pursue, etc because the root word Sue is part of the larger word). In addition, if a word is commonly used (like MySpace, yahoo, etc) you will be bombarded with email violations, the user will be bombarded with warnings and you will have many more screen captures to view.

Interesting features of Cyber Sentinel

CS can be set to block or allow any websites of your choosing. Upon visiting the websites viewed if you notice a website that your child visits that you want blocked simply add it to the list and check block.

CS can be set to disable or enable Internet use based upon time of day and day of the week. This is based upon a 24 hour clock so you can fully control when anyone gets online. This is particularly handy if you suspect your child to be getting online instead of doing homework or sleeping.

Words for your personal library can be tagged as embedded or non-embedded but not both. An embedded word is one that shows up in an email address or website URL. (The word sexy combined in an email address like hissexygirl16) Note; words can also be added to the Disabled Word Library that you want CS to ignore completely.

Cyber Sentinel carries a 30 day money back guarantee!

Summary

I would consider Cyber Sentinel a good starting point if you would like to monitor your child’s or youth’s use of the Internet to add a level of protection for them against online dangers. CS can effectively monitor and/or block content that can be a danger or lure young people into destructive or harmful behavior. If you are noticing that your child's behavior is changing and you are concerned that something deeper may be happening online you may want to consider one of our other recommended programs.
