Identity Theft and Paper Shredders

Its a fact that more and more crime is committed through the use of stealing someone else's identity. Credit is tarnished, reputations may be ruined, and your own personal security is certainly violated. It is important to start with the simple things to help protect your from becoming a hopeless victim of identity theft.

#1 - Buy a Shredder for your home

You and your families personal and financial informations needs to be protected from identity thieves. Do you want money taken from your bank accounts, credit cards illegally charged, or someone spying on your personal information. Do yourself a favor, make sure nobody has easy access to this information. Don't ever throw away a credit card, investment statement, or medical billing statement, SHRED THEM !

Please keep a shredder away from small hands ! This means your children, the kinder. Find a safe place, but still a useable place to keep your shredder.

#2 - Buy a Shredder for your office

Please don't think that because you are protecting your credit card numbers, social security numbers, and the like from criminal that protecting your clients and/or patients information is not just as important. Your notes, receipts, medical records, and personal infomation can be used by identity thieves just as easily if stolen from your place of work as well. It is, and should be your duty to protect this sensitive information. Imagine if your clients found out that it was your fault. Don't let this happen.

#3 - Buy a Shredder on Ebay !

There are many Sellers on Ebay selling shredders, but here are a few tips. Cross Cut or Confetti Cut shredding provides better security for your documents. Looks for a shredder that cuts the papers up like this. I am not saying that Strip Cut is bad. It would still be difficult to reassemble these pieces, but the better shred, the better you are protected.

Buy a Shredder on Ebay that is covered by a warranty. Shredders break and you need to be covered by a warranty. Make sure you maintain your shredder. Buy the shredder oil. Its cheap and great for proper maintenance.

Make sure you know what you are buying on Ebay. NEW or Refurbished/Reconditioned shredders are being sold on Ebay. Refurbs are still an excellent value, but be wary of the limited warranty that is covered.

Don't buy a flimsy shredder on the cheap. Your local membership warehouses are notorious for selling cheap shredders that can't handle much volume at all.

Fellowes is an excellent brand of Shredder that I  personally use and own. Look for a Fellowes brand on Ebay.
