IDE#1 Error, IDE#0 Error - What is it?

IDE#1 error is a post error that's most commonly seen in Toshiba laptops.   Your hard drive is IDE#0, and IDE#1 is your CD / DVD drive.   Two things can cause the IDE#1 error:  (1) a dead CD / DVD drive, or (2) an incompatible CD / DVD drive.

(1) Dead CD / DVD drive:  for IDE#1 to appear, your drive's electronics has to be deader than dead - the on-board electronics are not reporting in during post check, and that's that.   When IDE#1 error appeared, Windows ain't gonna see the drive at all (you can open My Computer and see for yourself.)

(2) Incompatible CD / DVD drive:  So ... with your old CD/ DVD drive giving you an IDE#1 error, you went and bought a replacement CD / DVD drive (a used one, or even a new one), and viola!   you get the exact same message.   What gives?   Well ... the new drive that you'd just bought has a drive-select that's incompatible with your original drive, so it ain't reporting in, either.   And there ain't no jumpers or dip switches on these drives to change the drive select, nor can you get around it by using any of the firmware updates to change the drive-select.   When that happens, the only way around it is to open up the lid of the drive, and hard-wire pins 45 and 47 at the drive connector.   That'll do it.

IDE#0 error is telling you that you have a dead hard drive, that's about as clear-cut as it gets.

And that's the lesson of the day.
