This is a trick to get free airfare or cash travel vouchers from the airlines.
If you are flexible in your depature or arrival times, go to the ticket counter when you get to the airport and ask to be put on the volunteer list to give up your seat if the flight is overbooked. I have done this almost every time I go to the airport and about a third of the time I receive a free round trip ticket or cash voucher to take the next flight to my destination. For instance, I gave up my seat for a 9:30 pm flight to LAX on Delta and they gave me $400 to take the 10:30 pm American Airlines flight instead, which they paid for. If they ask for volunteers the pay would have been $200. The vouchers are good for a year. Some airlines give round trip vouchers instead of cash. If you give up your seat sometimes you have to wait until the next day for a flight so it depends if you REALLY need to be there, but the clerk will tell you beforehand when and what flight you will be put on so you have a choice if you want to do it.
