Before u apply, u need to do the following:
Part the hair in four sections. Front to back with a part down the middle and from ear to ear. U should have four sections, Pin the other THREE SECTIONS OUT THE WAY... Leave the one your working on out. ALWAYS start in the nape of your hair. That is the bottom of the back, section ur starting. Part across about 1 to 1 1/2 inch parting. Always wear gloves. Keep open ventilation with any chemical service. Take the brush with the product on it or the bottle and start on the root which is as close to the scalp without getting on your scalp, it will get on but we try, for it not to. Stroke the brush down the shaft of the hair.If using the bottle squeeze out close to scalp and take your hands and spread down the hair shaft. When done with the section, comb with a small tooth comb, thru that section, any excess on comb, put back into bowl or bottle. Hairstylist don't waste product :) Making sure every strand has product on it. LEAVE STRAIGHT, do NOT pin section back up with Chemical on it. Go to the other side in the BACK of your head and do the same procedure. After the back is done u can go to the front of your head.
The great thing about smoothing systems is, they do not open the CUTICLE of your hair, they only ADHERE to your hair with the flat iron, Body Waves, Perms, Relaxers all OPEN the cuticle which can DAMAGE and give split ends! SMOOTHING systems DON'T do that, This is why u have to flat iron ur hair 5 to 8 times depending on the system u r using. Ur flat iron must reach a temperature of 410 to 450. That is just about any professional flat iron. U can pick one up for half the price at Marshall's or Tjmaxx. They have Chi, Baby Bliss and many others that reach 400 degrees.
