Mucha Bella Sunglasses has created this guide to help you determine authenticity of Chanel sunglasses BEFORE you purchase them on eBay.
First, if a seller has only one photo in their auction you will need to ask for the following additional pictures to determine the authenticity:
- A photograph of the inside right arm.
- A photograph of the inside left arm.
- A photograph of the hinge.
- A photograph of the serial number which is a laser etched onto the right lens. (older pairs may have the serial number on one of the arms)
- A photograph of the word Chanel which is laser etched into the top of each lens. (Older pairs may not have this)
It is impossible to determine authenticity from just looking at a photo of the front of the sunglasses unless they are terrible fakes.
The model number and color code of the glasses should be printed on the inside left arm. The model number is always four digits which may be followed by a dash and a letter and the color code is always three or four digits followed by a backslash and two more digits. For example: 5076-H (model number) 501/87 (color code).

Notice that the font is wrong but the model number and color code are correct. It is easy for counterfeiters to print the correct combination on them. Another clue that these are not authentic is that the letter "C" in front of the color code is capitalized. The "C" should be lower case followed by a period. The square between the 61 and 16 is also larger then on a real pair. It should be slightly smaller then the numbers. Below is an example of the correct markings for this same style in a different color.

Next we should look at the hinges. The hinge should only have three teeth, one on the lens side and two on the arm side. Examples below.
Fake Hinge:
Real Hinge:
The word CHANEL should be printed on the inside right arm on the sunglasses. The copyright symbol "©"is before CHANEL and the registered trademark symbol "®" is after the word CHANEL (ex. "©CHANEL®"). The phrase "MADE IN ITALY" should also be printed in the inside right arm but the text is smaller. Examples below:

The serial number of the sunglasses should be laser etched vertically onto the right edge of the right lens. Be careful! Some fakes can come with serial numbers etched on the lens. Real Chanel sunglasses DO NOT have a space after the first two characters of the serial number. Example below:
