Many refrigerators and freezers can impart odors, as well as food that is improperly packaged.
If there is an odor emanating from your cubes, you'll need to get to the source of the odor to get rid of it. Cleaning ice cube trays is something most people never think about. After all , the only thing that goes in them is usually water , right ?
When ice cube trays need a good cleaning, they let you know in the form of a noticeably unpleasant smell.
Here's a quick and easy method to eliminate these odors :
1. Wash the ice cube trays with warm, soapy water and a clean cloth , sponge or scrubbie to remove any surface bacteria that may be the cause of the odor.
2. Add a cup of white vinegar (any brand ) to a gallon of warm water and submerge the trays completely ( you may need to weight them if they want to float at the surface ) . Let them soak for at least two hours, then rinse and allow to air dry.
3. Clean out the freezer if it has been awhile since it has been cleaned out thoroughly, as odors from the freezer may cause your ice cube trays to smell , thus the ice made in them to smell as well. Remove all food, turn off freezer and allow it to thaw completely before washing out the inside with warm , soapy water. Wipe the inside carefully with a clean, dry towel and turn your freezer back on.
4. Place a box of baking soda ( any brand ) in the freezer to help reduce odors that may eventually end up in your ice. Make sure all frozen foods are packaged well to prevent further odors.
Please Note : If you trace the smell back to your freezer and cleaning it has not helped, talk to a professional in appliance repair as the odor may be coming from the insulation inside the unit.
