Decorating in Mid-Century Modern/MCM: I love aqua/pink!

When shopping eBay for specific decorating styles it’s always a good idea to know the key words to use for each era or style.

In this case the style is Mid-Century Modern or MCM. This style can run from the very late 40's to about mid 70's. After that it’s a whole new decorating age.

When shopping this time period for items for your home there are certain words that can be used to find the items you want.

Words to use in your searches:

MCM - Mid-century modern

Atomic - this was considered the atomic age, the race for the moon and everything having a fast smooth look

Eames - actually the name of a designer from the late 50's through the 60's. His name has became synonymous with this time period.

Retro - this word is pretty much self explanatory

Amoeba - there are ashtrays, glasses and dishes that have a type of amoeba looking design or shape, this word is used to describe this.

Funky - if you lived in the 60’s and 70’s your pretty used to this saying

Mod - used to describe things from the mid to late 60’s, remember Mod Squad

Kitschy - Also a term used for some of the more novelty type items from that time period, usually knickknacks and some kitchen items

After you pick the key descriptive word or words you want to use then it’s time to pick your color. The big colors this time period are: Aqua, Turquoise, Pink, Red, and Yellow. There are other colors that are used but none quite as popular as these 5.

And don’t think you have to have everything in every room match. I have tons of rooms in my house and although the kitchen, dining room and bathroom are all done in mid-century modern, the rest isn’t.
