I am writing this guide to help out my fellow COACH lovers who wish to purchase an authentic COACH Willis bag. Please vote below at the end of this guide if you found any of the information contained herein helpful.
What prompted me to write this guide was that I recently (unknowingly) purchased a COACH bag that was not authentic. I asked lots of questions but obviously not the right ones. Also, I did not ask for more pictures. You know, you want to think that people are honest, but some people may not even know what they are selling! I am usually a very good judge of authentic COACH items but even I got fooled occasionally. In the pictures the bag looked authentic but when I got the bag, boy was I surprised. Luckily, I had just purchased the exact bag but an authentic one and was able to make a side-by-side comparison.
Here is a picture of an authentic COACH WILLIS style 9927 bag from the COACH website.
Below is a side-by-side comparison of an AUTHENTIC versus FAKE COACH WILLIS 9927.
From the pictures the bag looked just like the authentic one from the website. But, on closer inspection I found many little things that did not add up to an authentic bag. The first thing that stood out was the COACH hangtag fob. The fake one is smaller and the back of it is unfinished suede leather. The first thought in my mind was, why would anyone put a fake COACH tag on an authentic bag? That is when I was led to investigate further and with a microscopic eye examine the entire bag very carefully.
The fake COACH fob was unlike any I have encountered. Also, it has “Leatherware” embossed underneath the “COACH” (hard to see in these pics) while the authentic bag is embossed on both sides with just “COACH.” Look at the size difference and also the size and shape of the hole. The authentic one’s hole is smaller and the chain occupies almost all the space of the hole unlike the fake whose hole is large.
Now look at both authentic and fake ones side by side. Can you tell which is fake below just by the size of the hole?
The tag on the bottom in both pictures is the fake tag. It is also smaller than the real thing. See the large hole? This should be very obvious!! There are many variations in fake COACH tags but this is probably the most obvious one.
Another giveaway is found in the Coach creed. Look at the “Made in the United States” under the “COACH” in the fake bag.
Fake
Take a look below at the zipper of the fake bag. Authentic COACH bags use quality YKK zippers and you can read “YKK” on the side of the zipper head.
Fake
Another way to tell a fake is by the turn lock closure. Look at the sloppy irregular oval shape and irregular stitching of the fake one and compare to the more rounded and even stitching on the authentic bag.
