Cigar Box Types

There are a variety of different cigar boxes out there. Over the years, what was popular has changed, as well, creating even more variety. Most cigar boxes are made out of wood. There are many different materials used for cigar boxes today. They are oftentimes very popular with collectors. They come in glass, silver, brass, paper, cardboard and artificial materials. Some of the most popular options follow.

If you asked anyone to tell you what a cigar box looked like, they’d probably described the traditional nailed wooden box. These boxes are made of several different pieces of wood and are fastened together with small nails. They usually have a fabric hinge. The box is usually covered with paper, branded and decorated inside and out. These boxes are where boxed pressed cigars come from. The tight packaging squares the cigars inside. The boxes usually come with two layers of cigars packed into them.

For longer-term storage, a slide lid box, sometimes called a cabinet box, is a popular option. These boxes are oftentimes used as a place to store cigars while they age. They have a slide-off lid instead of a hinge, hence the name. They have different arrangements of cigars inside of them and are named accordingly. An 8-9-8 box of cigars has three layers of cigars inside of corresponding number. A 13-topper has two layers; 13 on top and 12 underneath. These boxes can be used to age a cigar to its prime.

The Cuban chest is one of the most ornate types of cigar box and is not frequently seen today. These boxes are usually made of cedar. They have a lot of decoration and tend to be luxury items that come at a high price. These include upright tin boxes and lunchbox styles, as well. The tin boxes are sometimes highly decorated. Some cigars are stored in glass boxes. There are also boxes designed to hold the cigars upright.

Some people like to collect cigar boxes, especially antique ones. There are many different varieties out there today and which type you get depends upon your brand. No matter what type of box you get, you have to store it in a good humidor. Without proper humidity regulation, no cigar box can keep your cigars from drying out or getting wet and molding. Many boxes are durable and beautiful enough to merit holding onto for a long time.
