Bowflex Select-Tech vs Dumbbells by PowerBlock
I had the option to buy either the Bowflex Select-Tech Dumbbells or the PowerBlock Dumbbells, I chose the Bowflex Dumbbells on the advice of the sales person, after doing some research I found out that I made the wrong choice. I’m going to cover the pros and cons of both sets of Dumbbells to help you make the right choice.
Bowflex Select-Tech:
Pros:
- Easy to adjust
- Nice, padded hand grips
- Easy manoeuvrability while exercising
- The Dumbbell Stand is great, but a little difficult to put together
- Offset Weight Selection (ability to select two different weights on either side of the dumbbell)
- Covered in Plastic (makes little noise)
- Extremely Durable (even though they don’t look the part)
- Many different weight combinations
- Save a lot of space
Cons:
- Only go to 55lbs (which can be a major problem if you’re like me and have already maxed out on most exercises)
- Can roll away (but usually don’t due to the way the weights are designed)
- Price (although this is the case with most home gym equipment)
PowerBlock Dumbbells:
Pros:
- Easy to Adjust
- Nice, Padded hand grips
- Many different weight combinations
- Saves a lot of space
- They don’t roll away
- Very easy to use
- Very well made, feel strong and sturdy
- Can purchase add-ons that go up to 125lb in each hand
Cons:
- Price (again, usually the case)
- The final weight add-on is kinda clunky
- Manoeuvrability is tough on several exercises due to the unique design
- Side frames do bend if handled without care
Overall both of these products are awesome. When deciding which one to purchase you need to decide who will be getting the majority of workouts with them.
The Bowflex Dumbbells are great for females, seniors, and anybody else who will have a hard time maxing out the 52.5lb weight setting.
If you’re looking for Dumbbells to replace the entire DB rack of your local gym, and think you’ll easily max out the 52.5lb weight setting, your should go for the Powerblocks.
