WHAT IS A BINOCULAR?
Basically, binoculars do two main things. They increase the size of the image you are viewing, and they let in more light than your eyes can, making images appear brighter in low light conditions. A typical binocular is consist of two optical systems that are connected by a hinge sharing a common focus system then an image is projected simltaneously to both eyes providing a realistic perception of depth.

HUNTING BINOCULARS
Hunting binoculars can bring the outdoors a little closer to you. They will come in handy to survey the terrain ahead, scout for and view wildlife without spooking them, or just enjoy a piece of nature up close that you may have otherwise missed. Starting off by selecting the right pair is crucial to your enjoyment of the outdoors. Here at The Outfitter Store our trained product specialists have pre-selected a selection of hunting-specific binoculars for your enjoyment so you won’t need to spend days researching.
BIRDWATCHING BINOCULARS
A quality pair of binocular is a must have for any bird watching enthusiast. The ideal bird watching binoculars incorporate quality optical glass, lens coatings, and a lightweight housing for both convenience and brilliant color contrast. A quality 8x21 model may be just fine on a bright day for observing a bird approximately 10 feet to 20 feet away. But, if you’re observing an eagle’s nest half mile away, a 15x70, 12x50, or 20x50 model on a tripod may be sufficient. In practice you would expect to encounter different light conditions and expect to move from distant focusing to very close focusing. Under those conditions we recommend that you take the following binoculars into consideration: 8X32, 8X42, 10X42 or 8X56
TACTICAL LAW ENFORCEMENT BINOCULARS
There are certain characteristics that must be incorporated in a binocular for it to be specified as a true TACTICAL / LAW ENFORCEMENT binocular. For example, the binocular has to incorporate an ergonomically-designed housing and a special rubber armor covering which gives the user a comfortable and stable grip and also helps to protect the binocular from shock and harsh environmental conditions. It has to be comfortable to hold during long viewing sessions, must have impressive eye relief with twist-up eyecups that have fold down flaps to block light and change eye relief, and, to some extent, the binocular must have a built-in reticle system. A reticle system allows the user the ability to accomplish observations, coordination between the spotter and the shooter or weapons delivery personnel and compensate when range estimation is necessary.
ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS
For astronomy, a 7x50 model may be fine for observing the moon. To see more detail on planets, you’ll need a larger and more powerful objective such as an 8x56, 9x63, 12x50, 15x70, or 25-45x100 and so on. Of course, a tripod will be needed for the larger binoculars due to the size, weight and magnification. A binocular that has an exit pupil of 5mm or more makes an ideal binocular for astronomy observation.
WATERPROOF BINOCULARS
Waterproof binoculars are 100% waterproof and are usually fogproof as well. Binoculars that are fogproof are sealed with an O-ring and purged with nitrogen which is a technique that allows them to stay dry and free of moister internally after a complete immersion or after exposure to sudden temperature changes. Waterproof binoculars come in a wide range of sizes and magnifications.
ZOOM BINOCULARS
Zoom Binoculars are convenient to use when more power is needed to view a particular subject. The zoom mechanism on this type of binocular allows the user to enjoy not just one magnification but a choice of many. They have variable magnification allowing the user to view the subject up close without changing to another binocular. Some consumers believe it is convenient to have a variable magnification, while more professional users reject this idea due to the weight and minor sacrifice in image quality and the difficulty in stabilizing the image at high magnification.
DIGITAL BINOCULARS (BINOCAM)
This type of binocular is a relatively new classification. The binocular is designed with an integrated digital camera sensor. The digital camera’s resolution can vary from model to model. These types of binoculars provide the best of both worlds…binoculars and a high quality digital camera in one unit. Some are equipped with internal memory while most units with a higher mega pixel (MP) resolution require a separate Secure Digital (SD) memory card in order to take photos just like a conventional digital camera. Images taken with the digital camera can be viewed on the spot or downloaded to a PC.
TRAVEL BINOCULARS
For travel purposes, you may want to keep your weight to a minimum and prefer to carry a pair of compact binoculars such as an 8x21, 8x25, 10x25 or 12x25 or even a monocular. However, if you are serious about observing distant scenery or wildlife, you may not mind the extra weight of a 7x50, 8x40, 8X32 or 8x42 in order to obtain more magnification and/or better resolution or light gathering ability.
GENERAL USE BINOCULARS
General use binoculars are available in many configurations and styles. A few examples are: porro prism, roof prism, low to medium magnification like 7x, 10x and up to 16x, high magnification such as 20x, and 35mm to 50mm objective lens sizes or larger.
JUMBO BINOCULARS
JUMBO observation binoculars are incomparable optical instruments that are perfect for long-range terrestrial (land) viewing and celestial (night sky) viewing. Jumbo observation binoculars are the preferred alternative to decorative telescopes that may not be optically suitable for the demands of terrestrial viewing or an expensive astronomical telescope that may be complicated to use and have less optical quality and design integrity than a Jumbo. No matter which model you select, rest assured that you are investing in a fine piece of optical equipment that you and your family can enjoy for many years.
COMPACT BINOCULARS
These are the more modern compact and foldable binoculars with an objective lens of less than 32 mm and usually fit in the palm of your hand or slip into the pocket. Most of them are economically priced and have perfect blend of functionality and compact portability. Compact binoculars are a great multi-purpose binocular for field use, sports, travel, backpacking or camping.
