Before you decide what to sell, do some serious research. Research about what’s hot, what’s not, what is the highest closing price, lowest closing price, average closing price, what is best day to start your auction, worst day and so forth.
eBay’s Completed Listings. “Completed listings” is one of the best research tool created by eBay. It allows you to check out the recent auctions that close successfully and unsuccessfully.
By looking at this, you can roughly determine the market price for your product. Click on “Advanced search” after you have log in to your eBay account, you will find the “Completed listings” checked box at the middle of the page.
Besides looking at the market price, you can also check out how “hot” the product is. How many products are sold each day, each week and each month? If that product sells only 2 per month, that means is not popular to sell on eBay. Change to another product.
After you have found a hot product to sell, research the “hottest” seller. Study him carefully, why he become so successful selling that particular product.
What headline is he using? How he structure the description? What sort of graphics that he included? What is his average closing price? Shipping & handling charges? His product guarantee? How long is the guarantee period? What is his best ending time and ending day? Which category? Which format (normal auction, fix price, store inventory)? What is his terms and conditions? And so forth.
eBay’s Hot Category Report. This free monthly report will show you the hottest product category on eBay, which are the best categories in which to sell. To get this report, click the “Sell” link on navigation bar and then click “What’s hot” link. The report is updated every 30 days. Please check on it every month.
eBay’s Marketplace Research Database. eBay has prepare another market research tool besides the monthly free report. This feature includes average sold price, sold price range, start price range, average buy it now price range, average shipping cost, last sold price, number successfully sold, average bid per item and so forth. You will get all this valuable statistics for a fee.
Third Party Research Tools. There are other 3rd party research tools available for eBay research too. Check it out at Andale.com, AuctionIntelligence.com, DeepAnalysis2 and HammerTap.com, there will be some subscription fee.
More research also means less risk, spend some time do your homework properly before start selling on eBay. The long term result will be staggering.
